How to Choose the Right Cufflinks

Now that some of us are working in the office again, it might be time for a new pair of cufflinks to brighten up that businesswear! Whether you are buying them for yourself or as a gift, it’s important to select the right pair. Here are some of my tips for how to choose the right cufflinks.

1. Choose those that express your/their personality

When choosing a pair of cufflinks, you really want to think about what they express in terms of personality. If they are for you, see what kind of colours and patterns you are drawn to and whether you want a more simple style or something with a bolder aesthetic. If you are choosing cufflinks for a friend, family member or partner, you’ll want to think about the colours and styles you often see them wearing and what will complement those.

You can also think about what reminds you of them, as this is a great indicator of a pair that expresses their personality. If they are particularly artistic or creative, for example, they might like a pair of cufflinks that reflects that.

2. Add a pop of interest

Cufflinks are a great way to add some colour or pattern to an otherwise monochrome or simple look. You can keep your outfit smart and simple and get creative with your accessories. For example, a bold geometric pattern can look really fun with a white shirt.

3. Find a pair that is meaningful

While a lot of the decisions will come from the aesthetic of the design, it can be really nice to choose a pair of cufflinks that is meaningful, whether that’s to you or the person you are giving them to. For example, it might be a pair of cufflinks that are inspired by a favourite artist, featuring a favourite animal or simply a colour that you (or they) love.

4. Decide whether you prefer a square or round shape

You will also need to choose the best shape for the cufflinks. Most cufflinks are either square or round in shape so it will really come down to personal preference! Square cufflinks are a more classic style that look smart and sharp with any outfit, while round cufflinks are a little softer and can look more delicate.

5. Opt for an independent jeweller!

Another important thing to consider when buying a pair of cufflinks is who you are buying them from! There are plenty of wonderful independent jewellers out there selling unique cufflink styles, so you should make sure to check them out. Consider those that have been thoughtfully made by an independent business, rather than those that have been mass produced.

The cufflinks we sell here at Milina London, for example, are made in Britain by an independent business who share the same passion for quality, sustainability and creating beautiful things.

The collection is inspired by the arts, from the past to the present day.  Each design draws inspiration from the fine and decorative arts, antiquity and culture, capturing a small bit of historic significance in a classic menswear accessory.
